The Challenge

Building in Whistler's climate isn't for the faint of heart. Our clients wanted a year-round retreat that could handle heavy snow loads while staying comfortable without cranking the heat constantly. Oh, and they wanted it to basically pay for its own energy costs.

Our Approach

We went full Passive House standard - super insulation, triple-pane windows, airtight construction. The building envelope is so tight we had to design a pretty sophisticated ventilation system. Added solar panels on the south-facing roof and a ground-source heat pump that works year-round.

The Results

• 92% reduction in heating costs
• Net positive energy production annually
• Indoor air quality that's better than outdoor

The Challenge

Tech company wanted something that'd attract talent and make a statement about their environmental commitments. The site was tight - narrow lot in a dense downtown area with strict height restrictions and neighbors on three sides.

Our Approach

Mass timber construction let us build faster and lighter than concrete or steel. We used BC-sourced Douglas fir and spruce for the main structure. Five stories of column-free workspace with a central atrium that brings daylight deep into the floor plates. Green roof handles stormwater and provides outdoor space.

The Impact

• 400+ tons of carbon sequestered in structure
• 45% faster construction than conventional build
• Net Zero energy certified
• Natural ventilation reduces AC needs by 60%

Residential Interior

Kitsilano Garden Residence

The Story

Classic Vancouver special with good bones but a choppy layout that didn't work for the family anymore. They had this amazing garden out back but you'd never know it from inside - tiny windows, dark rooms, totally disconnected from the outdoors.

What We Did

Removed some non-structural walls to create flow between the kitchen, dining, and living areas. Added a wall of sliding glass doors that basically erases the line between inside and outside during summer. New skylights bring in morning light. Kept all the materials natural - white oak floors, plaster walls, stone counters.

The Difference

It's like a different house now. Light bounces around all day, the garden feels like part of the living room, and the family actually uses every square foot instead of hiding in their old den. Simple changes, massive impact.

Heritage Restoration

Gastown Heritage Restoration

Gastown, Vancouver | Completed 2022

The Challenge

1889 warehouse that'd been through several rough renovations and years of neglect. Foundation was settling, bricks were crumbling, and the whole building needed seismic upgrades to meet current codes. Plus we had to work within heritage guidelines that are pretty strict (rightfully so).

The Process

Three years of careful work. Stabilized the foundation first, then went brick by brick on the exterior - salvaging and cleaning originals where possible, sourcing period-appropriate replacements where necessary. Added modern systems hidden behind the walls. Seismic upgrades were done with steel frames that you can't see but you'll definitely appreciate in an earthquake.

• Original brick facade (85% preserved)
• Douglas fir timber beams throughout
• Cast iron columns from the 1890s
• Heritage character while meeting modern codes
